Wi-Fi generations receive consumer-friendly naming convention In October, Wi-Fi Alliance introduced a new naming system to identify generations of Wi-Fi. The names are tied to generations of major PHY releases and intended to drive user demand for new technologies. The next generation of Wi-Fi connectivity is Wi-Fi 6, based upon 802.11ax.
